Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation

With the guidance of their ownership group, the Pittsburgh Penguins organization has always been noted for their generous contributions to the surrounding communities. They understand the importance of their fans and the role that we collectively play in the development of the region. Their players, coaches, and front office staff are involved in every aspect of community development, but what makes the programs work is the response to those efforts by the fans.

For those fans, the Penguins always strive to be the best in professional sports both on and off the ice. With this in mind, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation was created — an effort to focus the organization’s wide-ranging charitable and community outreach efforts benefitting the youth in our region.

Sticks For Troops

As a way to relieve the stress of their deployments, American servicemen and women stationed at Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan two years ago built a street hockey rink and began a competitive club league. But hockey sticks are hard to come by in the Middle Eastern country, so the soldiers are relying on donations from home to support their pastime.

Wishing to contribute to a charitable organization this year, members of the Shady Side Academy Boys Varsity Hockey Team discovered Sticks for Troops, founded in 2012 to collect and send street hockey sticks to the U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. The SSA team members are asking for help in their collection efforts. The goal is to donate 100 street hockey sticks to send to the U.S. troops by the end of their 2014-15 season.  At present, right handed and goalie street hockey sticks are most needed.

Anyone wanting to donate street hockey sticks, order camoflauge t-shirts, or donate money to this cause can contact Tyler Gorse, a junior player and an alternate captain for the SSA Varsity team, at:
