HARMARVILLE, PA -- For the 22nd year, the St. Margaret Fall Face-off served as an unofficial start to the high school preseason, and the 2014 edition of the event proved to be one of the most-exciting in its history. Out of the 30 preliminary-round games, 16 were determined by two goals or less, and all three shootouts were determined by a single goal. Once the dust settled, Bethel Park, Pine-Richland, North Allegheny, Mars, Quaker Valley, and Greater Latrobe earned a trip to the elimination rounds.
Bethel Park and North Allegheny advanced to the championship game, and it proved to be just as thrilling as the rest of the tournament. Three periods of action and 5 minutes of overtime still left the game knotted at 2-2, and it took 9 rounds of a shootout to finally break that tie. That anointed the Tigers as the 2014 St. Margaret Fall Face-Off Tournament Champions – the seventh such title in their team’s history.
The ultimate winner, though, was the St. Margaret Foundation. Through the tournament, the PIHL was able to raise several thousand dollars for the Foundation, giving them the means to further serve their patients and operate their valuable programs.
